Campbell graduated from the Institute
for Colored Youth in Philadelphia with the class of 1867. She then began to
teach Latin, German and Spanish there. She rose to become the principal of the
school’s female department. When the Institute discontinued its academic
work, Miss Campbell accepted a similar position at Allen University in Columbia,
SC.
