This is a model of the Whittle House in Norfolk, Virginia. It is a Federal style house, sturdily built in 1791 of solid brick with carved stone lintels over the windows and doors. This period was one of growing prosperity with an emerging merchant class along the Atlantic coast who wanted to show off their new wealth with stylish homes. The house survives amid much reconstruction in downtown Norfolk and appears in a large new bronze plaque set into a downtown plaza (below).
