Course DescriptionThe objective of German 201 is to continue the development of the four language skills (speaking, listening, writing, and reading) in a cultural context and to review and expand upon basic grammar skills covered in German 101 and 102 (or their equivalent). We will work with two textbooks. Assoziationen will provide our basic structure. The text is organized by topic and includes various types of reading selections. The cultural and literary readings from this text will be supplemented by other authentic materials. The second textbook, Handbuch zur deutschen Grammatik, is a review and reference grammar. We will cover the first half of each textbook in 201; the second half of each will be covered in 202. Biweekly exams will cover all material covered in class and on homework assignments. Midterm and final oral examinations will give you an opportunity to demonstrate your increasing oral proficiency.
Exam dates: Sept. 17, Oct. 1, Oct. 20, Nov. 5, Nov. 22, Dec. 15
Oral Midterm: Oct. 12 by appointment
Oral Final: Dec. 15 by appointment

Participation and AttendanceParticipation and attendance are required. Please make sure to bring your textbooks with you to all classes and be ready to begin class on time. If you must miss a class, I expect you to inform me of this before class on that day. Make-up exams are possible only in the case of an excused absences. Absences are excused when due to illness, personal or family emergency, or religious holidays or campus activities recognized by the College of Wooster. Excessive tardiness and unexcused absences will affect your grade significantly.

HomeworkTo guarantee maximum use of our in-class time, reading and writing assignments are to be prepared and completed on time, as assigned on the syllabus. Our main purpose in class is to use German communicatively and creatively, and the homework is an essential means to this end. All written homework assignments are due on the date indicated on the syllabus. I will be happy to correct and comment on late homework but you will receive no credit for it.
Please keep in mind that homework includes reviewing information, vocabulary, and grammarpoints from previous lessons. "Übung macht den Meister (bzw. die Meisterin)," as the Germans say.
_______________________ Viewpoints I am presently involved in working on the Ohio 5 Viewpoints project, a collaborative multimedia project consisting of a series of CD-ROMs with a connection to the WWW. The CD-ROM for German 201 and 202 at Wooster will include a series of digitized interviews with native speakers of German on topics related to those we will cover in the two courses. The CD-ROM will certainly be available by the spring semester and I am hoping to have it to you already this semester. Until it is finished, however, we will work with the material directly from the video tapes, which will be on reserve in the library. I am excited about this project and look forward to your feedback about it.

Writing AssignmentsWriting assignments are due on the day indicated on the syllabus and will be graded as a separate category from the rest of your homework. This is done both to acknowledge the particular effort that these assignments require and to emphasize the importance of developing facility in writing. All writing assignments must be typed and checked with a German spell-check program before you hand them in to me. If you are not satisfied with the grade you receive for a writing assignment, you may revise it and the two grades will be averaged together. Revisions are due on week after the original assignment is returned to you.
