Course Description

German 102 is the second half of our first year beginning German sequence and requires German 101 or the equivalent. In this course we will cover chapters eight through fourteen of Deutsch: Na klar! in order to meet the course goals of developing the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) in a cultural context with a focus on spoken German. Because it is easiest to learn German by using and engaging with the language as much as possible, most of our class hours will be conducted entirely in German. Regular quizzes and exams will allow you to gauge your mastery of the topics covered in class.

Participation and Attendance

Participation and attendance are required for all class sessions. This is important both because active participation will help you to succeed in the course and because this course requires group effort. The better prepared each of you is individually, the more quickly we will cover the material and the more time we will have for creative review. Please bring your textbook and workbook with you to all classes and please be ready to begin the hour on time. If you must miss a class, please inform me of this before class on that day. Make-up quizzes and exams are possible only in the case of an excused absence. Absences are excused when due to illness, personal or family emergency, or religious holidays recognized by The College of Wooster. You will receive a daily participation grade based on a scale of 5 (=prepared and on time) to 0 (absent).
Excessive tardiness and unexcused absences will affect your grade significantly.

Homework

To guarantee maximum use of our in-class time, reading and writing assignments are to be prepared and completed on time, as assigned on the syllabus. Our main purpose in class is to use German communicatively and creatively, and careful preparation of homework before coming to class is an essential means to this end.

*It is most effective to complete the assignments when assigned rather than all at one time.

*You should count on about 2 hours a day of concentrated work outside the classroom. Keep in mind that preparation means more than just doing the exercises assigned. You will need to review frequently vocabulary and grammar explanations. Self correcting your homework will help you to know which areas require most attention. Ten minutes of review each day will go a long way toward helping you gain active control of the language.

*Homework listed as "Zum Einreichen" is due on my desk at the beginning of class on the date indicated. I will not accept any of these assignments after this time.

*I have also indicated on the syllabus the assignments in the workbook and language lab book that I suggest you do before coming to class. We will do some of the workbook assignments in class, so please bring your workbooks with you to class every day. You will find the answers for these Deutsch: Na, klar! workbook and lab manual assignments in the back of these books. For this practice to be most effective, I suggest that you complete the work in one color ink (or pencil) and correct it in another color. This will help you to see those areas where you need to direct most of your study time. Other than those assignments specifically indicated as "Zum Einreichen," I will not collect these assignments. You will, however, be responsible for this material on the chapter exams.

*You may complete lab manual assignments in the learning lab in the Audio-Visual Department in the basement of the library. You can check out the tapes or CDs for homework assignments at the AV desk. If you bring a cassette, the library can make a copy for you. Otherwise you can use the cassette players in the AV center. You can also access digitized versions of these assignments through the Sprachlabor link on this on-line syllabus. To do so, you will need the username and password that I will give you.

Writing Assignments

Writing assignments are indicated as "Schreiben" on the syllabus and are due on the day indicated. They will be graded as a separate category from the rest of your homework. This is done both to acknowledge the particular effort that these assignments require and to emphasize the importance of developing facility in writing. All writing assignments must be typed and checked with a spell check program. If you are not satisfied with the grade you receive for a writing assignment, you may revise the assignment and the two grades will be averaged together. Revisions are due one week after the original assignment is returned to you.

Exams and Quizzes

To help you learn the vocabulary, there will be a vocabulary quiz at the midpoint of each chapter. In addition, there will be an exam at the end of every chapter as indicated on the syllabus. Each exam will be worth 100 points and will include sections on listening, vocabulary, grammar, writing, reading and culture. To test your oral proficiency, you will also take an oral midterm and final. The midterm will be an interview with me. For the final exam, you will do group projects in the form of skits.

Quiz Dates: Jan. 31, Feb. 7, Feb. 21, Mar. 6, Apr. 3, Apr. 17, May 1

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to be familiar with and abide by the Code of Academic Integrity as outlined in The Scot's Key Official Student Handbook.. I consider the following to be means of attempting to gain unfair advantage over your fellow students: giving, offering, or receiving aid on exams and quizzes; knowingly representing the work of others as your own (this includes copying homework answers straight from the back of the workbooks); falsifying data. Cheating will result in a "0" on the assignment in question and a written report of the incident to the Dean of Students. In severe instances it will result in an "F" for the course.
