Using CAN8 - ESL Students

Logging on:

1.  In room 308 choose a DELL PC computer. (This room is in the self-access lab and you can visit it anytime from 8:30-8:00 M-Th and 8:30-5:00 Friday.) You cannot access the Can8 programs from the iMac computers.)

2. Move the mouse: the computer may be on, but just "hibernating." If the green light on the computer "tower" is not on, then check to make sure that the red button on the right side of the computer desk is on (illuminated); if not, turn it on. Then turn on the computer (below the table) and wait for it to boot up.

3. Double click on the Desktop Icon "CAN8"

4. Fill in your User ID and Password. This will be your last name and your first initial, without spaces.  For example, John Doe’s User ID would be "DOEJ".  If you used both your first and middle names on your ELI application, your User ID will be your last name, your first and middle initial.  For example, Kyung Wan Li’s User ID would be “LIKW”.  After that, fill in your password ("pword"); you may change your password if you wish--just be sure and do not forget it!

5. The Student Main Menu will appear. Click on the screens to locate the materials you need to work on.

* If you have an assignment for a class, click on ESL Classes, your course (A Oral, B1 Oral, etc…), then your class text or the assignment that your instructor has made for you.

* If you are working on your own or doing work for a mini course or lab, click on ESL Library, the skill you want to work on, and then select the book or the exercise that you would like to work on.

6. From the menu, choose the exercise you wish.  There will be two columns.  The first column is the Topic, which has the main idea of the exercise.  The second column or Item has the actual exercises in it.  Each Topic has many Items in it.

Quick Review:

The following screen is an example of a Listening Activity (or item).  The audio should start automatically.  Click on the Stop Sign to pause; the stop sign acts as a pause/start button.

If you want to repeat a section, just click on the yellow line (in the green wave area) and drag it to the area that you want to repeat.

If at any time it seems that nothing is happening, try clicking on the red "stop" icon in the toolbar; this functions like a pause key and may have been accidentally activated.
