Brown Bag Talk

Teaching Grammar online - Strategies to encourage student interaction in the target language and to foster active learning
by Sandra Hobbs

Sandra Hobbs received a FLTC Mini-Grant for an instructional technology project. As part of her project she developed online material for her French Grammar course.

Her objective with this project was to encourage interactions between students in the target language as they completed tasks, and also, to make students more active and independent learners (by decreasing dependency on the textbook and the instructor).

Sandra says: In this talk, I will discuss the strategies I used to achieve these goals, such as using Discussion Board and file exchange features within Blackboard to facilitate student exchanges outside of the classroom, and putting all student assignments, along with the materials needed to complete them, in Blackboard. I will also discuss the advantages and drawbacks of the hybrid course format I adopted for this course (1 traditional class meeting per week, increased time spent on the internet).

Time:
  1.00 p.m. – 2.00 p.m.

Venue:
  Japan Learning Center, 385 Manoogian

Date:
  Wednesday, January 23, 2008

Sandra Hobbs will talk about how she uses technology, how it enhances the teaching and learning process, what obstacles there were and how she got over them, what works and what does not, both in terms of pedagogy and technology. Of course, she will also take your questions.

If you are interested and your schedule permits, do stop by to hear Sandra!

Russian Listening Comprehension Online by Laura Kline

Laura Kline received an FLTC Mini-grant to create an on-line Russian Listening Comprehension course. The course allows students to improve their listening comprehension skills by working at their own pace through 28 short episodes of the popular Russian series Erelash.

Laura says “It also has made it possible for us to increase departmental offerings in Russian with relatively minimal demands on faculty. Available on Blackboard, this course includes written and audio vocabulary lists for each lesson,as well as self-grading exercises and exams, which provide students with immediate feedback on their work. At the Brown Bag I will talk about how this course was created and how it is functioning to date.”

Time:
  11.00 a.m. – 12.00 p.m.

Venue:
  Japan Learning Center, 385 Manoogian

Learning Italian Through Music: An Online Music Festival In Basic And Intermediate Courses by Laura Schneider

Laura Schneider received a FLTC Mini-Grant for an instructional technology project. As part of her project she developed an online repository of Italian music.

Laura says: The project had many goals: to put together lesson plans for our part-time faculty (thus providing a model), to create a music database, but most importantly to create a community of learners through common and shared goals. Again, one of the objectives was to have students from different classes and levels talk with each other and provide comprehensible input to each other in the zone of proximal development. In other words, the novelty of the project is in the community-wide participation. In fact, students from different classes and levels communicated with one another and also opened themselves up to the comments by the online Italian community through the blogs.

iGoldenAge by José A. Rico-Ferrer

José A. Rico-Ferrer received a FLTC Mini-Grant for an instructional technology project. Jose’s project involved the development of video Podcasts containing reference material, normally contained in Art History, History, Geography, Mythology, and Emblems books. Jose intended using the Podcast material in the Spanish 6430 Course, Spanish Literature of the Baroque.

Jose says: The availability of podcast technology makes the process of learning more customized, and more productive, due to the student’s increased exposure to the material. Not only do video iPods relieve students of the need for going to the Reserve desk, they also enable them to hear different lectures on their own schedule, freeing class time for in-text discussions. Podcasts are useful on upper level courses, allowing students to hear lectures either in English or Spanish, while exposing them to relevant graphic or visual material.

This presentation will discuss the challenges and procedures of locating and selecting appropriate images and film clips, generating a transcript, recording and editing the audio, setting the images and film clips to the audio, and making the finished podcasts available to the class.

Time:
  12.30 p.m. – 1.30 p.m.

Venue:
  Japan Learning Center, 385 Manoogian

Date:
  Tuesday, March 18, 2008

Jose will talk about how he uses technology, how it enhances the teaching and learning process, what obstacles there were and how she got over them, what works and what does not, both in terms of pedagogy and technology.

If you are interested in Podcasts, iPods or the GoldenAge come on over! Coffee and Cookies will be served!

Teaching Language with Movies: A New and Easy Way to Create Your Own Authentic Materials by Alexandra Pakh

Sasha Pákh-Kelly received a FLTC Mini-Grant for an instructional technology project last year. Sasha’s project involved the development of authentic materials for teaching grammatical elements and speech acts in the German language classroom. The project proposed to create online learning components in the form of excerpts of German cinema films, which will be used to introduce, illustrate, and practice particular grammatical elements (e.g., the past tense, use of modal verbs) and communicative exchanges (e.g., greetings, introductions, asking for directions).

Sasha says: With the use of technology in foreign language instruction we can hit several birds with one stone. Using movie clips for teaching enables us to bring in an authentic audiovisual component that is appealing to students as they work with channels they are familiar with. In addition, we can address more than one aspect of learning by combining listening comprehension with the development of grammar and cultural skills.

The Emil Reading Suite, Podcasts to enhance Reading Comprehension by Randy Schantz

Randy Schantz received a FLTC Mini-Grant for an instructional technology project last year. Randy’s project involved the development of Podcasts for

One part of the package is podcasts of the text together with images, pictures and video clips.
