Illustrations and Copyrighted Materials
Guidelines for Authors
PLEASE NOTE: If your submission containing illustrations or other copyrighted material is accepted for publication in Marvels & Tales, the following guidelines will apply.
Permissions:
Illustrations or any other materials under copyright cannot be used unless written permission has been secured from the legal copyright holder. (See MLA Style Manual, 2nd ed., [1998], pp. 34-48).
You are responsible for securing any necessary permissions for using copyrighted materials. A recommended letter for requesting permission is available to download in PDF format by clicking here. (Document requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.) (The letter refers to illustrations but may be adapted for other copyrighted materials, such as written texts.)
You must request and be granted "nonexclusive world rights and electronic rights" for the material to be reproduced in Marvels & Tales.
Permission fees are your responsibility. This includes any monetary fees as well as copies of the journal that the copyright holder may require.
Note: The process of acquiring the rights to reproduce copyrighted materials can take many months or more. You should begin requesting permissions as soon as possible.
Format:
Illustrations must be submitted in a form suitable for reproduction--8" x 10" black-and-white glossy prints.
Artwork is not routinely returned to authors, so do not submit irreplaceable photographs or artwork.
If your article has numerous illustrations, they should be numbered sequentially and their approximate placement indicated in the margins of your paper.
Captions:
Provide a numbered list of captions for your illustrations (provide both a hard copy and a separate file on disk). Include any required credits or permissions in the caption.
