As indicated on the French 6470 course syllabus, the final grade is based on a combination of components, some of which (e.g. class participation, pop quizzes) cannot be included in such an examination for credit. The course focuses on an historical introduction plus five dossiers that correspond to five of the six chapters in the main textbook adopted for the course, Ross Steele, Susan St. Onge, Ronald St. Onge, La civilisation française en évolution, II (Heinle and Heinle, 1997). A second textbook complements the material in the first one, Guy Michaud, Alain Kimmel, Le Nouveau Guide France (Hachette, 1996). The course structure is as follows:

1) les bases des structures sociales contemporaine du Moyen Age jusqu'aux années 1980;

2) Les institutions sociales: la famille, la consommation, les loisirs, la diversité, les milieux sociaux, les religions (dossiers I & II) ;

3) L'enseignement; les institutions et partis politiques; la Cinquième République et l'Europe (dossiers II, III);

4) Les institutions culturelles, les intellectuels, les médias, la culture moderne (dossier V);

5) La France d'outre-mer et la francophonie (dossier VI).

To facilitate examination for credit, it will consist of two general components: The candidate must study the readings on the historical material (segment 1) and then choose *two* of the four additional segments. The candidate will then prepare to take two take-home examinations:

1) the first exam will include identification questions from the historical material plus questions over the first segment chosen.

2) the second examination will include a section of explanatory identifications of terms and names in the section chosen, and also several essay questions from which the student will choose one or two, as indicated.
NB: The "segments" do not correspond to the individual chapters in La civilisation française en évolution II book; rather, the correspond to the course segments as indicated on the attached syllabus.

Once the candidate has chosen his/her preferred sections, he/she should consult Prof. Stivale to receive the specific page references for readings in both text books in order to prepare these precisely, as well as to receive supplementary study questions.

The examinations may be taken in one day or over several days (or weeks) depending on the candidate's schedule. The length of the answers must be adequate to respond to each question or identification in both a concise and complete way. In general, each answer for the identification terms must be 10-12 lines each, typed or word-processed. For the essay questions, between 2-3 pages each (typed or word-processed), with a maximum length of 10-12 pages in all. Each page should be numbered, and also all sources consulted should be clearly annotated in a supplementary bibliography.

The final grade will be determined as an average of the two parts of the examination taken.

It is the student's responsibility to have made all the necessary administrative arrangements (i.e. signatures on the credit by examination form, payment of the fees) *prior* to beginning the first part of the examination, and must bring the completed form at the time of commencing the examination.
